Partner Math ... Math Pockets
Children need lots of opportunities to use their hundreds charts and number lines as they practice their double-digit addition and subtraction skills. Math Pockets is a fun way to practice these skills, with a partner, without ever using paper or pencil. Each partner group gets a little math pocket and opens it to find two numeral cards inside. Partner A uses a dry erase marker and number line to solve the problem, making sure they show their jumps and label their number lines. Once they find their answer, Partner B uses the hundreds chart to double check their answer. If they agree, they choose a new math pocket and switch roles.
Hint ... make your "pockets" from a variety of fabrics. This will help children keep track of those they have already worked on. I used scraps from my fabric stash. I ran the number cards on two different colors of construction paper and laminated them so that I can use them year after year.
