After reading my book, Grandma's Quilts, the children worked with partners playing I Spy Fractions (see resources). Instead of posting each fraction picture around the room, I
placed them on the covers of file folders that I had cut in half. I made it an
activity that partners could "self-correct" by placing the answers
inside each file folder. File folders were placed on desks and the partners
moved from desk to desk, identifying (and writing down) each
fraction, and then checking their answers.
Quilt blocks are a wonderful resource to help teach children fractions. Did you know that the Four Patch block can help teach children about fourths while the Rail Fence block is a great example of thirds? All of the blocks and quilts featured in Grandma's Quilts can be found in my latest quilt book, From My Quilted Heart to Yours (Book 2) ... Quilts and Blocks from the Children's Book, Grandma's Quilts.
