Hello and welcome to my website. My name is Kathleen L. Stone. I am a wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and recently an author! Born and raised in Washington State, my husband and I live in the Olympia area. Since I began teaching in 1978, I have taught kindergarten, first, second, third and fourth grade. I was one of the first thirty primary grade level teachers in the state to be awarded the prestigious Gates' Foundation Technology Grant and in 2010 I earned my National Board certification. I currently teach second grade with North Thurston Public Schools and was the 2014 Teacher of the Year for my school.
I enjoy traveling with my husband and spending time with my family. When I’m not writing I can often be found quilting or sitting quietly by the lake enjoying a good book. Becoming a published author has fulfilled one of my lifelong dreams and has encouraged others that it's never too late to pursue your dreams!
My hope is that this website will provide resources and activities that you can use to strengthen the math skills of the children in your life and to help them see that …

Math is all around us
No matter where you turn
Open your mind to the wonders of math
And all that you can learn
No matter where you turn
Open your mind to the wonders of math
And all that you can learn
Recently I decided to write books about another one of my favorite things ... QUILTING!
If you are a beginning quilter or one who wishes they had more time to quilt, this book is for you. Easy to follow directions will guide you as you create easy, traditional blocks. Using these blocks, you will be given detailed patterns to create a number of quilts. Follow the directions as printed or add your own creative adaptations and you will soon be on your way creating your own heartwarming quilts for family, friends, or donations. As an added bonus, I have included several of my favorite heart healthy recipes to go with each one of my quilts. So let's not wait another minute ... it’s time to get started creating your own “art of the heart.”

Whether you are an experienced quilter or just a beginner, you will love this book. The quilts and blocks in this book are the same ones featured in the author’s children’s book, “Grandma’s Quilts … Fun with Fractions.” Did you know that the Rail Fence block can help your favorite children learn about thirds while the Pinwheel block can help them see halves? Use the featured blocks to help strengthen their math skills and then have fun putting them together into quilts that they can keep or share with others. However you choose to use them, you are sure to have fun.

My husband and I have been Youth Firesetter Interventionists with West Thurston Fire since 2006. We work with youth and their families that have been involved in fire setting situations. For a while now I've thought about putting together a manual, complete with lesson plans, forms, and resources, for other departments to start their own programs. I am happy to say that I've finally done it!
